Holiday Self-Care Tips

The holidays are full of celebrations from all cultural backgrounds. But no matter how or what you celebrate, and how jolly our intentions may be, this time of year can bring about stress and exhaustion. Try out the tips below to keep your season joyful!

  1. Gratitude - No matter what time of year it is, keeping an attitude of gratitude is always a great way to positively shift your mindset. Remind yourself what what you feel grateful for, either in a journal or out loud each day.

  2. Try something new - Traditions are so much fun and bring feelings of nostalgia. Trying something new gives you the opportunity to find new traditions and challenge yourself by stepping out of your comfort zone, which releases dopamine, a hormone that creates feelings of happiness.

  3. Take time for self-care - While this season centers around giving, take time to give back to yourself. Whether that's treating yourself to something that you have been wanting, or just giving yourself the gift of time, taking moments to care for yourself will leave you feeling energized and ready to celebrate.

  4. Say no - If you find that your calendar is looking chaotic, remember you can say no. It's important to maintain your healthy boundaries, and it's ok to not commit to every event in which you are invited.

  5. Go outside - If the weather will allow, take some time to be outdoors. We all benefit from fresh air and vitamin D from sunlight, especially when we want to stay huddled inside. Even if you just take a quick 10 minute walk, get outdoors and watch your mood improve.

  6. Listen to music - Whether it's holiday music that puts you in the holiday spirit, or your favorite year-round tunes, listening to music releases those good hormones that leaves you feeling focused and relaxed.

  7. Celebrate! - This is what the season is all about, celebrating with our loved ones. Have fun and enjoy!

The season goes by quickly, and for some, that is a relief. By trying out the tips above, you can either lean in to the season with new spirit and joy; or if it's not your favorite time of year, you can pass through the season with contentment. While this time of year looks differently for us all, we can take this time to rest, celebrate, and reflect on the year thus far. Slainte!
